A Rushed Arrival In The Lobby
The revolving glass door swung forward with force, catching the edge of the plastic board and ripping the masking tape clean off the frame.
The white placard dropped straight down, clattering against the polished gray floor tiles.
The woman in the burgundy fitted dress barely blinked. She pulled her arm free, straightened her ponytail, and sprinted down the carpeted hallway toward the elevators without turning around.
An older man with gray hair and a matching beard stood inside the glass enclosure, holding a fresh roll of packing tape in one hand. His mouth dropped open as he watched her heels disappear around the corner.
Before he could step through to retrieve the fallen marker, a second set of footsteps echoed across the entrance hall.
A Deliberate Heel Strike
A tall man wearing a dark charcoal suit marched toward the threshold.
He kept his chin lifted, his chest squared, and his leather dress shoes clicking sharply against the tile.
Right at the mouth of the revolving compartment, the white board lay flat with bright red block letters reading “Cleaning in Progress.”
The man did not step around it. He planted the heel of his polished oxford squarely onto the plastic panel, grinding the surface under his sole with a harsh, hollow crunch.
The plastic bent under his weight, leaving a dark gray scuff mark directly over the printed lettering.
He paused for a brief second, glanced down at the edge of his shoe, gave a dismissive flick of his ankle, and continued walking toward the inner offices.
The gray-haired worker in the navy utility jacket watched every movement through the glass partition.
Kneeling On The Cold Tile
Moments later, a third visitor walked into the reception area.
She wore a simple beige cardigan over a light blue blouse, paired with flat sneakers and loose trousers.
The moment her eyes caught the overturned sign resting against the threshold, her stride slowed.
She bent her knees and knelt directly on the stone floor, reaching down with both hands to lift the damaged sign.
She ran her thumb across the scuffed dirt left by the previous walker’s shoe.
Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a clean white cloth and unfolded it across her palm.
She pressed the fabric firmly against the red letters, scrubbing back and forth across the smeared grime until the red text showed clean and bright again.
When she stood up, she stepped straight toward the older man standing in the doorway.
She checked the edge of his sleeve, helped steady his balance as the heavy glass panel swung near him, and rested a gentle hand against his forearm while the morning crowd began to stream into the building.
The Jacket Comes Off
A short time later, the corporate conference room sat completely still.
Three applicants stood shoulder to shoulder in front of the executive desk: the woman in the burgundy dress, the man in the dark suit, and the woman in the cardigan.
Sitting in the leather task chair was the gray-haired worker from the lobby.
He looked at each of them across the desk, his gaze moving slowly from their tailored clothes down to their shoes.
Then he reached his fingers up to his collar.
He unbuttoned the dark blue utility jacket and peeled it off his shoulders, letting it slide down the back of the chair.
Underneath was a crisp, freshly ironed white button-down shirt.
The man in the suit shifted his weight from one foot to the other, his shoulders dropping two inches as his eyes widened.
The woman in burgundy pressed her lips together and stared hard at the corner of the desk.
The gray-haired executive reached down, picked up a stack of printed paperwork, and took a two-handed grip on the contract sitting on top.
With a clean rip, he tore the contract straight down the middle and dropped the halves to the side.
He then picked up a fresh document, signed the bottom line, and extended the paper across the mahogany table directly into the hands of the woman in the cardigan.
