The Struggle On The Grass
The German Shepherd pressed his broad front paws firmly into the dirt on either side of the little girl’s shoulders, locking his weight over her back.
The child lay flat on her stomach, her fingers buried into the blades of green turf as her wide eyes darted toward the crowd.
Two men sprinted across the lawn and dropped to their knees beside the animal.
One man, wearing a blue police uniform, grabbed the handle across the dog’s tactical vest with both hands.
Beside him, a man in a plain white shirt wrapped his fingers around the dog’s thick collar, hauling backward with all the strength in his arms.
Veins bulged along the man’s neck as his teeth clenched tight, trying to pry the massive animal off the child’s small frame.
“Rex, get him off her!” the man shouted, his heels digging into the soil to gain traction.
The dog did not budge an inch, his hind legs anchored deep into the lawn like steel pillars.
An Unyielding Guard
Rex kept his chest pinned squarely over the girl’s spine, keeping her head low against the ground.
The officer wrenched sideways on the harness, attempting to roll the dog over onto his side.
The dog’s dark brown eyes never left a cluster of white-and-blue striped fair tents set up fifty yards away across the open pavement.
His ears remained pinned forward, upright and motionless against the warm summer breeze.
Underneath his heavy body, the young girl stayed quiet, feeling the steady rise and fall of the canine’s ribcage pressing against her back.
Every muscle along the animal’s spine remained coiled, bracing his posture against the frantic tugging of both grown men.
The man in the white shirt pulled again, grunting under his breath as his knuckles turned pale around the nylon straps.
Then, a faint hiss broke through the park air, followed by a sudden swirl of gray vapor creeping from beneath a food stall table.
The Sudden Shift
The man in the white shirt paused his pull, his gaze drawn toward the plume drifting across the asphalt.
His grip on the collar loosened as his jaw went slack and his eyes widened in sudden alarm.
The thick white cloud expanded rapidly around a propane setup beside the vendor tables.
“Jake,” the man whispered, his hand sliding away from the tactical vest.
“Jake, stop pulling him.”
The officer froze, looking from his partner’s startled face to the silent dog still holding his ground over the child.
The man in the white shirt dropped his torso down until his head was level with the girl’s ear, extending an arm over her shoulder.
“Emily, stay down,” he said, his voice dropping low and firm.
The dog shifted his weight forward by a single fraction of an inch, ducking his muzzle just above the back of the girl’s neck.
The Wall Of Fire
A thunderous roar cracked across the park as an orange fireball erupted into the sky, tearing through the striped canopy of the vendor tent.
Shrapnel and burning debris scattered across the black pavement, sending a wall of hot gray smoke rolling across the lawn.
The shockwave ripped through the treetops, shaking the branches directly above the family.
Rex never flinched, absorbing the rush of air against his thick double coat while keeping the girl entirely shielded beneath his torso.
The officer shielded his eyes behind his forearms, crouching low against the grass as smoke rolled over their heads.
Beside them, the father held his breath, his hand resting beside the dog’s paw on the grass as the orange glow faded into rising gray clouds.
