Cops Seize Amputee Veteran’s Crutches To Give Him Better Ride

A Sudden Interruption on the Sidewalk

The metal tips of the heavy aluminum crutches clicked sharply against the concrete sidewalk as the veteran took another slow step forward.

Beside him, a golden-furred yellow Labrador retriever trotted at a steady, disciplined pace, keeping its shoulder level with the man’s right knee.

The veteran wore a tan digital-pattern camouflage military uniform, his left pant leg pinned up neatly above a black carbon-fiber prosthetic leg.

A dark police SUV with flashing red and blue emergency lights pulled up to the concrete curb just a few feet away, blocking their path completely.

Two police officers stepped out of the vehicle and walked directly toward the soldier, stopping him in his tracks on the narrow sidewalk.

Without explanation, each officer reached out and grabbed one of the aluminum crutches, sliding them firmly out from under the veteran’s arms.

Discarded in the Trash

The veteran wobbled slightly on his feet, balancing his entire weight on his prosthetic limb and his remaining boot.

One of the officers turned and walked quickly toward a large green metal dumpster sitting near the brick wall of a nearby building.

He lifted both metal crutches high above his head and threw them directly into the trash bin, where they clattered loudly against the discarded garbage.

The officer walked back to his partner without looking back at the bin, his hands resting near his black utility belt.

The two officers then positioned themselves on either side of the veteran, placing their hands firmly under his elbows to keep him upright.

They guided him toward the rear door of the police cruiser, supporting his weight with every slow, uneven step he took.

A Quiet Ride in the Backseat

The officers helped the veteran slide into the backseat of the vehicle, ensuring his prosthetic leg cleared the door frame safely.

The yellow Labrador jumped into the vehicle right after him, settling onto the dark leather seat next to its companion.

Once the door closed shut, the veteran wrapped both of his arms around the dog’s neck, burying his face in its light fur.

His shoulders shook as he held the dog tight, his eyes squeezed shut while the police car pulled away from the curb and entered traffic.

The cruiser traveled down the quiet suburban streets, its sirens now silent as the officers drove toward a local commercial strip.

They pulled into the parking lot of a retail business with a large sign reading Mobility Scooter and Scooter Shop.

A New Way to Move Forward

The officers opened the back doors of the vehicle, offering their hands to help the veteran step out onto the hot asphalt.

Moments later, the veteran rolled out of the store’s main entrance sitting atop a brand-new glossy black mobility scooter.

Attached to the side of the motorized vehicle was a custom-built sidecar, painted black to match the scooter’s frame.

The yellow Labrador sat upright in the sidecar, its front paws resting on the padded edge as the veteran gripped the black handlebars.

A wide smile spread across the veteran’s face as he turned the throttle, steering the new machine down the smooth sidewalk.

The two officers stood by their patrol car, raising their hands in a wave as the man and his dog glided past them into the afternoon sun.
