Cyclist Stops To Help A Swan Guarding Her Newborn Babies

A Sudden Stop On The Trail

A bicycle tire skidded to a stop along the paved path as a mother swan remained sitting rigidly in the grass, surrounded by four tiny cygnets.

The cyclist dismounted quickly, setting his bike upright against the wooden rail beside the roadway. He stepped onto the damp grass, noticing bright green cord wrapped tightly around the adult bird’s black webbed foot.

The mother bird stretched her long neck upward, her dark eyes tracking every shift in the rider’s posture. She stayed anchored in place while her gray, downy chicks huddled directly against her chest feathers.

A Careful Approach To A Protective Mother

The cyclist knelt slowly onto the grass, lowering his center of gravity so he would not tower over the nestlings. He extended one gloved hand out with open palms, moving at a slow and deliberate pace.

Swans are known to strike aggressively with their powerful wings when protecting their young, but this mother kept her wings folded against her sides. She turned her orange beak toward him, letting out a soft hiss before settling back down on her belly.

The rider placed his palm gently onto the swan’s back, resting his fingers lightly across her white plumage. The physical contact helped stabilize the large bird, keeping her from thrashing and pulling the tight loops deeper into her skin.

Unraveling The Green Cord

With his other hand, the cyclist reached beneath the bird’s flank to inspect the tangled mess. Thick green nylon line was coiled in multiple snug loops around the upper joint of her foot, pinning her webbed toes in an unnatural bend.

He worked his index finger under the tightest loop, feeling the tension across the cord. The cygnets chirped softly, shifting in a tight cluster just inches away from his knuckles as he worked.

He slid the first knot loose, pulling the cord inch by inch until the slack widened. The mother swan cocked her head, remaining motionless as the loops gradually slid over her black claws.

With a final gentle tug, the entire spool of green line slipped free from her leg. The cyclist gathered the discarded cord into a neat bundle, pulling it completely out of reach of the babies.

Back To Open Water

As soon as the pressure released, the mother swan pushed upward onto both feet, testing her weight on the grass. She took three steady steps toward the water’s edge, her four chicks instantly falling in line behind her tail feathers.

The family marched down the muddy bank and slid smoothly into the open lake, rippling the clear surface. The cyclist pushed back on his pedals, gliding down the road as the swans drifted together in the distance.
