A Frantic Moment At Check-In
The airport agent tapped her fingers against the keyboard and stared at the monitor before looking up at the customer in front of her.
She delivered the total cost of twelve hundred dollars for the flight ticket, expecting him to present a card. The traveler flipped open his wallet and rapidly shifted through empty sleeves, his brow furrowing as he realized his payment cards were gone.
He rested both hands on the edge of the counter and leaned closer, explaining that he needed to get home immediately. The agent kept her posture rigid, informing him that no boarding pass could be printed until the balance was cleared.
An Unexpected Intervention
A worker wearing a blue janitorial jumpsuit stepped into the space between the traveler and the counter.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a payment card, and held it out toward the terminal reader. The agent paused, addressing the custodian directly by his name tag and letting him know that he was under no obligation to cover the expense.
The custodian tapped his card on the reader anyway, keeping his focus on the counter screen until the payment beep sounded. He accepted the printed slip from the terminal and handed it directly to the traveler.
A Brief Encounter
The traveler accepted the paper, his hands trembling slightly as he looked between the receipt and the man in the blue jumpsuit.
He asked why someone who did not even know him would pay for such an expensive ticket. The worker simply adjusted his backpack strap and introduced himself as James.
The traveler extended his right arm, grasping James’s hand tightly before grabbing his briefcase and rushing toward the security gates. James watched him disappear into the crowd before picking up his broom and returning to dust the concourse floor.
The Return To The Terminal
The following afternoon, James pushed his yellow cleaning cart through a set of double doors leading into an administrative suite.
He stopped short as the traveler from the night before walked into the room alongside an airport supervisor. The traveler wore the same sharp suit, carrying a folder under his arm instead of luggage.
The supervisor pointed toward the suit-clad man and explained that he had just acquired full ownership of the operations company overseeing the terminal staff. The new owner stepped forward, reaching into his inner jacket pocket to pull out a freshly printed blue security badge.
He extended the badge toward James, showing the freshly printed title beneath his name: Director of Employee Welfare.
