Stranded in the Driftwood
A sea lion thrusted its neck upward against the wet sand, snapping its open jaws as strands of neon green and orange plastic netting pulled taut across its chest.
The discarded tangle anchored the young marine mammal directly to a sun-bleached log half-buried in the shoreline.
A pair of hands clad in thick black waterproof gloves extended forward, lowering slowly into the animal’s field of view.
The sea lion let out a sharp, raspy bark, flexing its dark flippers against the cold beach sand in an attempt to push away from the approaching boots.
Instead of pulling back, the rescuer sank into a low crouch just inches away, holding both palms flat and motionless at chest level.
Gaining Trust on the Shore
The animal reared back a second time, its wet throat pulsing with rapid, shallow breaths.
The gloved right hand moved slowly toward the side of the animal’s neck, gently pressing down against the mesh to test how tight the plastic had knotted into the wet fur.
As the fingers lightly stroked the crown of its slick head, the sea lion’s wide, dark eyes softened.
Its open mouth snapped shut, and its chin relaxed downward onto the cold sand.
With its head tilted back in acceptance of the gentle touch, the rescuer reached into a pocket and brought out a pair of small steel utility shears.
Cutting Away the Tangle
The rescuer slid the lower blade beneath the top loop of green mesh, keeping the blunt edge pressed away from the sea lion’s skin.
A firm squeeze snipped the tightest orange cord, loosening the heavy tension wrapped around the animal’s left shoulder.
The sea lion remained still, closing its eyelids while the scissors snipped through three more layers of tangled nylon filament.
Careful fingers peeled the loose webbing backward, gathering the colorful plastic bundle away from the flippers and lifting it clear off the sand.
With the entire log attachment removed, the rescuer gave the animal one final stroke across the top of its head before stepping backward.
Returning to the Waves
The sea lion pushed upward on its front flippers, shaking its slick body as if checking for any remaining pull from the ropes.
It turned its head toward the open water where white foam was rolling across the hard-packed sand.
Pivoting its body toward the surf, it pushed past the stranded driftwood and shuffled rapidly across the wet flats into the incoming tide.
The cold ocean spray hit its chest, and the sea lion dove into the dark crest of the first breaking swell.
The rescuer held up a black-gloved hand in a quiet wave as a dark snout broke the surface of the rolling surf yards off the beach.
