A Forest Monkey Approaches An Unresponsive Bird And Her Nestlings

An Unresponsive Mother On The Forest Floor

Three tiny nestlings stretch their necks upward, opening their bright yellow beaks wide as they chirp against the forest floor.

Beside them lies an adult brown bird, pressed flat against a bed of dried oak leaves and green moss.

Her dark eyes remain shut, and her left wing rests limp and splayed against the damp ground.

Every few seconds, the chicks crowd closer to her side, nudging her still feathers with their small beaks.

She does not lift her head or shift her posture as the young birds continue their frantic calls.

An Unexpected Visitor Steps Forward

A rustle of twigs breaks through the woodland undergrowth just behind the fallen bird.

A female macaque walks forward on all fours, carrying a small baby clinging tightly to her chest.

She halts just inches from the cluster of feathers, lowering her head to inspect the scene.

Her baby peers over her shoulder, blinking at the small chicks huddled together in the leaves.

The macaque crouches down low, shifting her weight onto her haunches so she sits level with the nestlings.

She reaches forward with two fingers, touching the dry leaf litter beside the still bird.

The young chicks tilt their heads up at the large primate, opening their beaks wider in search of nourishment.

A Gentle Offering Of Food And Touch

The monkey extends her right hand and retrieves a broad green leaf dusted with small seeds and grains.

She carefully lowers the leaf down right in front of the three nestlings, placing it flat against the forest floor.

The hungry chicks instantly drop their beaks to the surface, pecking rapidly at the loose grain scattered across the green leaf.

The macaque watches them eat, keeping her body still while her infant rests securely against her side.

While the chicks feed, the macaque turns her attention back to the limp mother bird.

She extends a single hand, resting her palm flat across the bird’s brown back feathers.

Her fingers gently stroke down the curve of the bird’s spine, checking for movement beneath the still wings.

The bird remains motionless, her head resting sideways among the brown oak leaves.

Water From A Leaf Brings A Sudden Shift

The macaque pulls her hand back and reaches down to lift a curved green leaf cupping a pool of clear water.

Holding the edges between her fingertips, she tilts the leaf forward over the bird’s head.

A steady stream of water trickles down over the bird’s closed eyes and across her stiff neck.

The dark feathers soak up the moisture, flattening against the skin as water drips onto the surrounding moss.

For a brief second, nothing moves except the slow drip of water falling from the leaf tip.

Then, the bird’s dark eyelids flutter open.

Her head snaps upright, shaking loose droplets from her beak as she pushes herself up onto her feet.

She spreads both brown wings wide across the forest floor, pulling all three chicks underneath her feathers while the macaque sits back quietly with her baby in the green shadows behind them.
