A Hungry Request
A young girl unzipped a worn leather wallet, revealing completely empty compartments.
She held the flap open alongside a young boy, both looking up toward the high counter of a food truck. Dirt smudged their cheeks as they asked if anything on the board was cheap enough for them to buy.
The vendor looked down over the silver edge of his counter. He took in their frayed clothing and the open wallet held in their small hands.
An Unexpected Meal
Instead of turning them away, the man reached into his display casing and picked up two large burgers wrapped in yellow paper.
He set the warm packages directly into the children’s hands, telling them they did not need to pay a single cent. The boy’s eyes widened while the girl pulled a burger close and took a quick bite.
Both children grinned, promising to pay him back as soon as they grew older. The vendor leaned forward on his counter, watching them walk away while whispering a quiet wish for their safety.
Decades Pass on the Street Corner
Decades went by, and the bustling city street evolved around the vendor. His hair turned silver-gray, and deep lines carved into his face as time wore on.
The modern food truck was gone, replaced by a small, single-wheel street cart resting against the curb. The old man sat on a low plastic stool, burying his face in his hands as tears ran down his cheeks.
His cart sat quiet without customers, and his worn apron hung loosely around his stooped shoulders. With his head bowed, he sat alone against the tall brick buildings of the city.
The Promise Kept
Engine noise echoed down the street as a shiny red sports car pulled up right beside the vendor’s cart.
The car door opened, and a man in a tailored dark suit stepped out onto the pavement alongside a woman wearing a blue dress. They walked directly over to the weeping man, asking if he remembered the two hungry children from years ago.
The woman pulled a thick envelope stuffed with hundred-dollar bills from her purse and placed it into the vendor’s calloused hands. Tears continued to fall from the old man’s eyes as he looked at the money and back up at their smiling faces.
The woman wrapped her arms around the old vendor while he held the stack of hundred-dollar bills against his chest.
