A Demand in the Sanctuary
The pastor leaned forward over the wooden podium, his graying beard trembling as he pointed a finger directly at the congregation.
Sister Louise stood in the aisle, her hands clasped nervously against her black skirt as the leader confronted her about missing her tithes for two weeks.
She lowered her eyes, explaining softly that her household bills had stacked up and her pantry was almost completely empty.
The pastor offered no sympathy, insisting that she needed to plant her seed regardless of her personal hardship.
Louise nodded submissively, promising to make things right despite her mounting financial burden.
Sacrificing Groceries for Faith
Back inside her home, Louise’s son Sam walked into the room holding a small stack of twenty-dollar bills he had earned.
He handed the cash to his mother, telling her it was money meant specifically for buying groceries for the house.
Louise held the green bills in her hand and told him the money would have to go to the church instead.
Sam’s jaw tightened as he reminded her that they had already given everything they had just three weeks prior.
Louise shook her head, explaining that another church member had recently been expelled for failing to keep up with her payments.
She warned Sam not to speak against the church, her hands shaking slightly as she placed the bills safely into her pocket.
Doors Locked from the Inside
During the Sunday service, the pastor gripped the sides of the pulpit and surveyed the room with an angry frown.
He declared into the microphone that collecting only three thousand dollars in the offering plate was unacceptable.
Turning toward the back of the room, he shouted at the ushers to pull the heavy double doors shut and bar them immediately.
He barked that nobody would be permitted to leave the sanctuary until an additional two thousand dollars was collected from the pews.
Louise sat in her pew with her head bowed, pulling out two hundred dollars to place into the plate.
The pastor stepped down from the altar, calling out Louise directly for giving what he considered a meager amount.
Standing Up to Misguided Authority
Sam stepped in front of his mother, placing his body between her and the approaching pastor.
He raised his voice, shouting that two hundred dollars was every single cent his mother had left to her name.
He explained that his family was facing eviction because every spare dollar was being turned over to the church.
The pastor kept his posture stiff, arguing that other members were giving up their light bill money and college funds.
Sam stepped closer, staring directly into the pastor’s eyes as his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.
He accused the leader of exploiting poor people who were suffering just to fill the church’s coffers.
Louise gasped, bringing both hands up to cover her mouth as the two men stood eye-to-eye in the center aisle.
The pastor narrowed his eyes and warned Sam not to interfere with what he had built.
Sam remained planted on the floor, glaring back at the pastor under the overhead sanctuary lights.
